Growing up in upstate New York amidst a family of successful painters and illustrators, Bliss went on to study painting at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Illustration at The University of the Arts (BFA) and Syracuse University (MA).
Prior to his cartoons and covers for The New Yorker magazine, Bliss illustrated dozens of book covers for writers such as Lawrence Block, Dorothy Uhnak, Bob Dole, and Fiona Buckley.
Bliss's first children's book, A Fine, Fine School by Newbery-award winning author, Sharon Creech, was a New York Times bestseller. Bliss has illustrated many picture books since then including Which Would You Rather Be? by William Steig, Countdown To Kindergarten, (winner of the Minnesota Book Award), Mrs. Watson Wants Your Teeth, and A Very Brave Witch (a New York Times bestseller), all by Alison McGhee, the #1 New York Times bestselling series by Doreen Cronin: Diary of a Worm, Diary of a Spider, and Diary of a Fly, and Louise, the Adventures of a Chicken by Kate DiCamillo which was published in the Fall of 2008. While not on tour promoting his picture books, Harry can be found drawing his internationally syndicated, single panel gag cartoons entitled BLISS. Harry N. Abrams published Death by Laughter, the first collection of these extremely witty cartoons in Spring 2008 with an introduction by Christopher Guest. In addition, he has won Nickelodeon Magazine’s 2007 Distinguished Achievement Award for children’s design and illustration.
